Project: New Interventional MRI Scanner Suite
Site: 4th Floor St. Thomas’ Hospital, London
Client: Philips Medical Systems Ltd
Value: £460,000.00
Duration: 18 Weeks
Contract: Design & Build Turnkey

Description

We were appointed on a turnkey basis to carry out the project.
This involved the conversion of 4th floor offices to create the accommodation as agreed with the users during the design stage with our in house Architect.
Interventional MRI Scanner systems require the “marriage” of both RF shielding and radiation protection disciplines together with the technical aspects of interfacing both mechanical and electrical services.

Using many years of industry knowledge and previous expertise on 3 other Interventional MRI systems are able to bring the project to a successful conclusion.

Genesis’ design team designed and produced a layout, which met all the clients needs; a fully co-ordinated finishes scheme was created by the design team, which left the client with a fully functioning and compliant facility.
The design process fully involves the end users and their input is factored in to produce the finished article.

A 12m x 5.7m Copper RF (Radio Frequency) Cage was installed within the main exam room, this is used to shield the MRI scanner from any outside interference.

Genesis designed and erected a special load bearing scaffold tower adjacent to the main vehicle entrance to the hospital for delivery of the 6.5ton magnet. Having carried out numerous types of these scaffold constructions this was carried out with no inconvenience or disruption to the hospital.

A load bearing platform was designed and constructed with in the exam room to raise the floor to the height of the window so the MRI could be delivered; ramps were then used to lower the scanner into the final position.

The walls forming the exam room were clad with lead as to shield and contain the radiation emitted from the X-ray unit within the room. A special lead glass observation window was incorporated so the patients can be monitored during the scanning procedures.

Bespoke joinery was provided by our in-house joinery division as to suit the clients specific requirements.
Bespoke Corian worktop with integrated bowl as to provide clinical excellence and support infection control.
